Rainy days and Wednesdays... Also, SGA
I got caught in a downpour yesterday without a raincoat or an umbrella. Sadly, I couldn't take shelter because I was on a mission to hit two libraries and finish up an assignment before my 6:30 class. Even more fun, the bottom of one of my sneakers started leaking like crazy, so by the time I was heading back to the FIS building my foot was actually squelching with each step. Blargh.
My day was slightly improved by the tasty pumpkin nut loaf I got at Starbucks, and that in my information tech class, my teacher was explaining to us how the Internet works. He kept saying, "The Internet-" and then pausing to take a breath, and every single time my brain chimed in happily, -is for porn!
There's this scene I have my head, based entirely on this line from Sports Night, where Rodney comes into John's room after the events of Tracker, and ends up doing one of his pacing/babbling things while John half-listens, as per usual. Except then Rodney ends up spilling the whole thing about wanting to date Jennifer, except that he thinks Ronon does too, so they talked about it and came to an agreement, and at this point John's sitting up and going, "What. The Fuck."
In my head, this isn't slashy at all, it's not John being upset about Rodney dating or anything, it's about John being pissed-off that two members of his offworld team, two of his friends, have actually agreed - agreed! - to compete with one another for the affections of the chief medical officer.
So John's kind of angry with Rodney and Ronon both, like, "Yeah, this is really going to be great for the team, thanks guys," but he's also really, really baffled by the whole thing. Like, John's aware of the fact that relationships aren't his forte, but he's gotta ask, "So... why can't you just go to Keller now and ask if she wants to go out with you? If she says yes, you have a date, and if she says no, then it's over." Why are you two futzing around like this is high school?
So Rodney starts trying to explain(badly) about romance and courting and working up to things, and John's rolling his eyes because he's pretty sure the actual explanation is that they're both being dumbasses. AND THEN Rodney busts out with, "Well, I think - I'm at least 85%, no, higher, maybe 93% sure that I'm in love with her, so this is delicate -"
And John blinks, and is like, "Uh, since when?" And Rodney gets a little pissy, but John's all, "No, I'm serious, since when? Have you guys been hanging out secretly or something?" So Rodney has to explain about how Jennifer is smart, "practically genius-level, although maybe not in my-" "Whatever, Rodney, get on with it", and nice and funny, and hot, hello! And she seems to like him, she asked him out for a beer even, and she's just perfect really, in every way - and John has to pinch his nose for a second because, God, this is like Katie all over again.
And so John keeps trying to parse the situation and maybe talk some sense into Rodney(yeah, like that's ever worked), and finally Rodney says something like, "Look, I can't let this go, okay - I really - this could be it, you know? I love Jennifer, I actually - and I think -"
Ans then John finally snaps and says, "And I think that when you use the word "love" romantically, you have no idea what you're talking about!"
And then they just stare for a few seconds because that was way over the line and both of them know it. And they both know it's (maybe) true. Eventually Rodney recovers and is hurt and really fucked pissed and says something about how John's such an expert, right? How long did your marriage last again, two years?
And John has to get out of there, because things can only go downhill from here, but he tells Rodney before he leaves, "The two of you better work this thing out before our next mission, because I'm not taking the team offworld like this."
But see, I can't actually write this fic, because I don't think it would be in character for John to go that far in discussing like, relationships and feelings and Rodney's personal dysfunctions when it comes to relationships. I mostly just really want someone to tell Rodney that he has no idea what he's talking about when it comes to being in love with someone. Which might be unfair to Rodney, I don't know, but based on what we've seen of his canon relationships so far, it rings pretty true to me. And since Carson's gone and I don't think Radek would get that personal or confrontational, John's the best bet.
